In Person Testing

Thank you for your interest in obtaining or upgrading your U.S. amateur radio license with the NYC Resistor Amateur Radio Club! We are offering in-person examination sessions at the NYC Resistor hackerspace in Brooklyn, NY.

We are partnered with the Greater LA Amateur Radio Group (GLAARG), an organization of volunteer examiners across the U.S. who conduct in-person and online exams. GLAARG has successfully tested thousands of applicants and we are excited to have you join their ranks. Our shared goal is to get you licensed and on the air!

Who may register

• Anyone with an interest in obtaining a new U.S. amateur radio license or upgrading their existing licenses.
• You may take multiple elements (Technician, General, Extra, in that order) in a single appointment. We just ask that you have studied and are ready to pass.
• No walk-ins: pre-registration and pre-payment are required.
• Minors (under age 18) are required to be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times.
• As with all NYC Resistor events, this is governed by the NYC Resistor Code of Conduct

Accessibility info

Resistor is located on the fourth floor. If you would like to use the elevator, please ring the buzzer and a member will bring the freight elevator down; otherwise, you will need to use the stairs. There is a short set of stairs leading to our building’s front door (5ish steps). We do have a short portable ramp available that is at a grade appropriate for a wheelchair with a push assist. Please call our land line if you need to make contact to bring the ramp down 347.707.7006.

On exam day, please bring

• Photo ID
• Pen with dark ink (we will provide a paper test and answer sheet)
• Non-programmable calculator (optional)

Fees and fee waivers

The exam fee is $10 paid in advance via PayPal. It can be waived by completing this form if any of the following categories applies to you:

• Minors (under age 18)
• Full-time student (under age 25)
• Active U.S. military or U.S. military veteran
• GLAARG volunteer examiner upgrading to Extra

When you pass, please note the FCC charges a $35 fee for new licenses, renewals, and vanity call sign requests. This is in addition to the exam fee.

If you do not pass, at the discretion of the volunteer examiners, you may retest at the same session. The fee for retests is $10, even if your first exam fee was waived.

Next steps

After you register, you will receive a confirmation email from our testing provider ExamTools, and a PayPal link for the $10 exam fee and instructions to receive for a fee waiver, if applicable.
